He told me to pay attention.

I was trying to. I really was.

Jeremy stood in the midst of the green grass, arms outstretched. Jaw tight, trembling, blood ran from his nose down his chin, but he didn’t wipe it away. He didn’t falter. He stood tall, strong.

Half a dozen feet ahead, a man in silver armor was on his knees. Between them was an ethereal vine of energy. Coming from Jeremy was a string of blue light, twinkling with silver specks, encased by a cloud of inky gray. It stretched outward from his palm, from every pore on his body, toward the man on his knees.

Pale green light, like an early spring bloom, rippled from the man’s body in Jeremy’s direction. Arms out at his sides, almost as though he was praying, his mouth opened and shut. No words left him, no words could, but that pale green light did. The pale green light flecked with little drops of gold. It poured from his mouth, from his skin, like he was a cloud, and the light was rain.

Only, Jeremy was like a tube vacuuming the light into his own. With every second that ticked by, more of that green energy pooled inside of Jeremy’s inky smoke.

He was yanking his soul from his body, and that man, the one who had only looked to be in his thirties, was gradually withering into an old man before my eyes.

Until his breath stopped entirely, and he dropped to the grass.

Jeremy swatted the blood from his nose, and a flash of pale green light ejected from his body to the sky above. “You understand the idea?”

“I do,” Ramona said, hardly audible at my side.

“You?” he asked me.

I gave a short nod.

And I did. I understood. I knew how he did it, and I knew how I had to do it.

But it was so hard to think about the concept of have to when they were screaming behind me.

“Pick one.” Jeremy pointed to the shield.

Oscillating slowly, it took everything I had to trap my vomit in my throat.

Behind the twinkling, golden shield, the men and women cried. They begged.

Please don’t do this!

Please don’t hurt me!

I’m a mother!

I’ll leave them! I’ll stop working for the Angels!

Please don’t kill me!

Pick one. They were begging for their lives, and he told me to pick one.

How the fuck was I supposed to pick one?

“That guy”—Hannah pointed into the shield, gesturing to a man who was not in silver armor, but rather a loose pair of trousers and a flowing, stained white tunic—“he raped a twelve-year-old girl. One of Iliantha’s maids. She was holding him to make an example of him. But then the girl heard us talking, and she asked us to take care of him. You can check his mind if you want to, but it’s there. He’s the swine of the universe. He deserves this.”

“They all deserve it,” Jeremy said, crossing his arms. “I know it’s hard when you hear them begging for mercy, but believe me when I say that they deserve it.
